Understanding WLAN Power Save Mode

Image
WLAN Power Save Wi-Fi has been adopted for a variety of devices addressing various use cases. Many of these applications require the devices to conserve power as much as possible. For example, mobile phones should reduce the total power used so that they can last from charge to charge. Maintaining a connection to the Access Point at all times and servicing consumer & enterprise applications over that link can run the battery down significantly. In order to reduce the issue of battery drain,   IEEE  introduced  WLAN Power Save Mode  as part of the 802.11 spec. Power Save Mode  is an important feature for end users to save their battery power and use the device for extended hours. It allows the devices to switch between active and sleep states to conserve energy. Power Save Standards Power save is classified into two: Legacy Power Save Mode   The client sends UL data and waits for some time. It indicates to the Access Point that it is going to be i...

Wi-Fi 7 Static Preamble Puncturing : Throughput in a mixed clients scenario

Image
Wi-Fi 7 Static Preamble Puncturing Introduction Among a host of features like MLO, 4K QAM, and 320 MHz, Wi-Fi 7 also introduces Static Preamble Puncturing that can be used for a variety of reasons. Preamble puncturing was initially introduced in 802.11ax mainly for the MU transmission (OFDMA frames). However, in 802.11be aka Wi-Fi 7, this feature is introduced for SU frames and has been made mandatory to be supported by clients in the 6 GHz band (static preamble puncturing only with dynamic puncturing support being optional).  In this blog, we aim to discuss static puncturing and its impact on throughput in scenarios involving mixed clients for SU frames (Non-OFDMA). Use cases Congested Environment: When introduced in 802.11ax, preamble puncturing aimed to improve efficiency in congested network scenarios by allowing transmissions even if part of the spectrum is unavailable. Radar Detection: Preamble puncturing allows devices to avoid switching channels when radar signals ...
